| The story of Sevens rugby Sevens Rugby was invented in the 19th Century in Melrose, Scotland by local butcher and Captain of Melrose David Sanderson and his apprentice and scrum half Ned Haig. The game is played by 7 players on each side and lasts 7 minutes each way (10 minutes each way for the final). If games are level after full time in knock-out games, extra time is played where the first team to score is the winner. This "Golden Score" is a legacy from David Sanderson who, in extra time in the final of the very first 7s tournament, led his players from the pitch after scoring first in extra time as their opponents, Gala, lined up for the re-start. From these beginings Rugby 7s has developed from end of season fun into a major sport in it's own right with many players specialising in the Sevens form of the game. There is now an International Rugby Board competition with National Teams playing in eight tournaments around the world including Hong Kong, Twickenham, Murrayfield, South Africa, USA, UAE, New Zealand and Australia.
There is a Sevens World Cup, Sevens at the Commonwealth Games and they are trying to become an Olympic Sport. There are also Sevens Tournaments for clubs of all levels around the world. |
